Vehicle matching scams
Vehicle matching scams
Vehicle matching scams occur when a fraudster cold calls a victim in response to an advert placed online or in a newspaper or magazine.
A fraudster guarantees an immediate a buyer for their car as long as they pay an upfront fee before the sale is completed which is non refundable. In reality there is no buyer and the car will not be sold.
Protect yourself against vehicle matching scams:
- Be sceptical if you are cold called and ever asked for money in advance.
- Never give out your credit or debit card details.
- You should be cautious if you encounter anyone who is overly aggressive or pushy. If in doubt, end the telephone conversation.
- If you think you have been the victim of a vehicle matching scam, or you suspect a scam, email or call Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
If you have information about fraudsters you can pass it on to Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111 or by filling out our secure online giving information form.
