The Mix youth event
[August 2008]
The Mix was a new youth festival that took place in Burgess Park in South London on Sunday 17th August 2008.
Past event details:
The Mix aims to bring the many talents of the young people of Southwark together to share the stage with the very best professional performers and Crimestoppers are making sure they are a key part of the big day.
Crimestoppers have been running a ‘Community Affairs' project in the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth targeting young people around the issue of gun and knife crime, which in Southwark alone has seen a 440% increase in actionable calls. With 20,000+ young people expected to attend, Crimestoppers are going to use the event as a platform to get its message of anonymity out to some of those who need it the most.
Some of the activities planned for the day include a stall in the main tent with information and free giveaways and a performance taking place in the afternoon on the main stage. Disguised as a fashion show, young people will take to the stage in a range of different t-shirts and hooded tops representing the number of young people that have been murdered on the streets of London as a result of gun and knife crime. Each young person will wear a t-shirt with the slogan ‘I am not what I wear', depicting the negative stereotypes that are portrayed in the media about young people. Each of the items of clothing will have different messages before the presenter, Chris Preddie, a community champion for the charity who lost his brother to gun violence, announces to the crowd about the power of Crimestoppers and the emotive message, ‘What do you want to be?'
