Tackling drink driving in the Channel Islands

Drivers in the Channel Islands are being reminded that drink driving is unacceptable as Crimestoppers in both Jersey and Guernsey and Jersey’s Road Safety Panel launch an awareness campaign. [June 2010]

Jersey drink driving campaignThe awareness campaign also has the support of the States of Jersey Police and actor, Sean Arnold.

So far this year, just over 100 drivers have been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and the figures from previous years show that the number of arrests climbs into several 100 year in, year out.

Crimestoppers takes action

Crimestoppers and the Road Safety Panel believe there could be a hard core of people, who know drink driving is wrong, dangerous and illegal but are still prepared to take the risk, perhaps because they think they won’t get caught.  So the charity has taken action, by launching the drink driving campaign.

Actor Sean Arnold is also actively supporting the campaign. The actor, who regularly appeared as Inspector Crozier in the TV series Bergerac has appeared in the public information film Don’t let them get away with it, which is at the forefront of the campaign.

Call anonymously

Karen Le Roy Harris, Jersey Crimestoppers Co-ordinator said: “We’ve carried out a number of focus groups to gauge public opinion about reporting someone they know that is drink driving and we know it is a lot to ask. This is why Crimestoppers are involved. Crimestoppers is an anonymous 24hr phone line, where you won’t be asked your name, you won’t be asked to give evidence in court and we can’t trace your call.”

Peter Cropper, Chair of Jersey Crimestoppers said: “Crimestoppers offers people who may be concerned about calling, the chance to remain anonymous. If you know someone who is drink driving then please call the Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.”

If you wish to pass on information about crime anonymously, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or fill out our anonymous online Giving Information Form.
