Shop a shop
Help stop the sale of alcohol to children. During 2008, we're appealing to people to call Crimestoppers about shops who sell alcohol to children. Anyone who spots an illegal sale should call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The Shop a Shop campaign is being run by Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) and Nottinghamshire County Trading Standards.
Posters are being developed which will be put up in schools, libraries, police stations, shopping centres - in fact, wherever there is space to advertise 'Shop a Shop' we will do it. Members from all the agencies taking part will be going into schools to talk to kids about the dangers of alcohol abuse, and shopkeepers will be visited across the county.
Sarah Smithurst, Crimestoppers Co-ordinator in Nottinghamshire, said: "By phoning Crimestoppers to 'shop a shop', you could be helping to save lives in terms of the health costs associated with alcohol abuse.
"There has definitely been an increase in children drinking on the streets. We're not just talking about kids downing alcopops - they are drinking bottles of vodka and other spirits.
"More bars and pubs are getting the message on underage alcohol sales through test purchase stings, but off-licences and shops are not."

50% young people in North West England have had alcohol bought for them by an adult (MORI study)
Three licensed premises failed a test by South Nottinghamshire police when teenagers tried to buy alcohol earlier this month. Paul Gretton, Manager of Nottinghamshire Trading Standards, said: "We rely on intelligence on traders selling alcohol to children, and if this campaign generates more of that, we will be able to act more quickly.
"There was a study carried out by MORI on behalf of Trading Standards in the North West of England, where 50% of youngsters admitted buying alcohol, but 50% said it was bought for them by an adult - most notably a parent.
"Parents need to understand the health and legal implications of what they are doing."
