Fear of crime
As part of an outreach programme in Northern Ireland, targeted at young and old alike to promote the anonymous 0800 555 111 phone number, Crimestoppers joined forces with Age Concern Northern Ireland to launch a campaign to reduce the fear of crime held by older people in Northern Ireland.
The campaign aimed at promoting and raising the awareness of our anonymous 0800 555 111 telephone service amongst older people. The campaign was launched with a briefing by Crimestoppers to representatives of Age Concern groups from across Northern Ireland.
According to the latest crime statistics released, offence rates against older people in Northern Ireland have remained constant during 2006-07.
Increased media attention in recent times has highlighted attacks against older people which can be seen to have increased the fear of crime, especially among those feeling most vulnerable in our communities. Such a real fear of crime can leave people feeling isolated within their own homes.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Tom Cairns, Director of Policy and Public Affairs commented: "All older people should be able to live safely and securely in their homes and communities without fear of crime and harassment. But for those people with information on crime, who may prefer not to reveal their identity, the charity Crimestoppers offers an extremely valuable service.
"We're delighted to help raise awareness of Crimestoppers by providing the opportunity for them to inform our members directly of their role in society. Clearly Crimestoppers enables older people to help in the fight against crime without becoming involved or being fearful of reprisal, therefore Age Concern Northern Ireland is supportive of their work in helping to make communities safer."
