Crimestoppers - 20 years on the beat

Crimestoppers were featured in the Basingstoke Gazette recently for all the work we've done in the last 20 years.

As this year marks Crimestoppers' 20th anniversary, it was a great time to tell everyone in our area about all the beneficial work we've been doing in local communities.

Read an extraxt from the article:

Crimestoppers came south in 1994 when a group of local businesses were encouraged to form a board by the central office. They included Whitbread, Royal Mail, Stagecoach and local media including Meridian Broadcasting - the new ITV station. Designated Southern Crimestoppers they covered Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, with one employee stretched between Ramsgate and the New Forest. Civilian staff in Brighton took the calls on the 0800 555 111 number.

An early high profile success was Victor Farrant who had fled abroad after murderous assaults on two women in Eastleigh and Port Solent leaving one of them dead. His photograph with the Crimestoppers number was on display at ferry ports. A call came though locating him to a bar in Nice which he was running and which attracted all the young English speaking backpackers. Within 48 hours he was in custody. He was subsequently found guilty at his trial in Winchester.
