It's your call

In 2006, we surprised members of the public by wrecking cars in 3 different locations across East Surrey. Supported by Surrey Police, we staged these stunts to publicise a campaign to urge local residents to give us information anonymously about those who commit anti-social behaviour in their communities.

Don't let crime and anti-social behaviour ruin your life. That was the campaign message. If you know who is responsible but you don't want to talk to the police, then you can tell Crimestoppers without having to say who you are.

Superintendent (Neighbourhoods) Jerry Westerman said: “Anti-social crimes such as vehicle damage and graffiti may not make headline news, but they affect the quality of life for everyone in our communities. Many people know those responsible for these offences, but have understandable reasons why they do not want to be seen talking to the police. This is where Crimestoppers has a vital role.”

Surrey Crimestoppers it's your call campaignOver 2,000 young people in East Surrey were given the campaign message through a one week Crimestoppers schools tour. The message was simple – if you have information about crime and don't want to give your name, then call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. It's your call.

We challenged the audiences to think about taking responsibility for their actions and showed them how they can make informed decisions when dealing with issues such as crime, anti-social behaviour and drugs. They were told what it means to get an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) and the consequences of getting involved in any criminal activity.

Neighbourhood Superintendent Jerry Westerman also said: “The police work hard to keep Surrey safe, but we rely on the support of the people we are here to help. Everyone has a responsibility for keeping their local community free from crime and anti-social behaviour, not only in the way they themselves behave, but also in the way they deal with information they may have about offenders. If people are unwilling to talk to the police, they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 and pass on what they know without ever having to say who they are. It's their calls that count.”

The message was then sent out into the wider community through full-scale publicity. Posters were displayed throughout the area and leaflets were delivered directly to many homes encouraging people to ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
