Saw it, report it

We visited Redhill town centre last year with a major awareness campaign, aimed at getting those visiting, living and working in the area to report information about crime anonymously.

Surrey Crimestoppers 'saw it, report it' campaignThe Saw It, Report It campaign promoted the Crimestoppers telephone number 0800 555 111 with high profile marketing, which included window posters, lamp post signs, advertising and general merchandising.

The initiative, supported by Legal & General, aimed to improve awareness of how everyone can help keep their community safe by calling the 0800 555 111 number. There's no need to talk to the police, leave contact details, give a witness statement or go to court. Here at Surrey Crimestoppers, we believe that reducing crime can be that easy.

This local campaign came hot on the heels of research commissioned by Legal & General to understand how secure people in Britain felt. Legal & General's Safety Uncovered Index identified that:

  • 55% of people have worried about crime in the last 3 months
  • Of these, nearly half (49%) were concerned because they had been victims of crime or witnessed a crime first hand
  • Men are more likely than women (53% compared to 45%) to have experienced crime

Jane Wright, Projects Officer of Surrey Crimestoppers said: "Crimestoppers operates to break the wall of silence that surrounds most crime. The anonymous number provides a lifeline to people with information they want to share, but feel at risk from retribution or simply don't want to get involved. Working in this way, Crimestoppers has created a highly effective system built on integrity and trust that works for everyone - except criminals. It's a simple, secure service that allows the police to be put in the picture, without anyone knowing who provided the information and importantly, brings criminals to justice.

The campaign was adopted by The Warwick School in Redhill and some of their pupils attended the launch.
