Gwent Police warn of potential council tax scam

Gwent Police is warning residents of a potential scam after two people received phone calls offering them up to £7000 rebate on their council tax in exchange for a donation to charity. [28 January 2011]

Two incidents of this nature were reported to police on Monday 10 January. A resident in Brynmawr and a resident in Newport were contacted by a man, speaking with a foreign accent and purporting to be a Government representative, requesting their personal details to be able to go ahead with the rebate.  

Neither resident released their personal details and no money was exchanged.

Officers are reminding residents never to give personal details, including information relating to your bank account, over the telephone to any caller that cannot be verified as genuine.
