Teresa Johnson*, Crimestoppers call handler

Teresa Johnson has been a call handler for Crimestoppers for 2 years. She's received calls about murders, drug dealers, brothels, child exploitation and abuse. Teresa has seen criminals who she's taken information about in the newspapers, having been arrested and brought to justice. So despite some difficult and often heart-breaking calls, she knows that Crimestoppers works.

“Today I received a call from someone who had seen some child abuse images on their friend's computer. The caller said that in the footage, a small child, no older than 3 years old, was being raped. It's horrifying to hear. That's someone's little baby.

"I do get some very difficult calls as a Crimestoppers call handler. But it's really important that I stay focused to make sure I get as much information as possible from the caller. That call could be our one chance to catch a serious criminal.

"We get a huge number of calls about drugs. Often, a mother or father has seen their child's life messed-up by drugs. They've found the phone number of a drug dealer on their child's mobile phone and are calling it through to Crimestoppers. But their lives have already been devastated by drugs and they're inconsolable with grief. I have grandchildren of my own and I can't imagine what I would do if I was going through what some of these callers are.

"Crimestoppers is a charity and we need all the help possible to make sure we keep catching criminals. Quite simply, I'd encourage people to support Crimestoppers because it does work. We often can't publicise this to protect the anonymity of callers, but we know it works.

"I often see stories in the newspaper, where criminals I have taken information about have been caught. I also had a call from a lady recently who had information about women who'd been trafficked to work in a brothel. She told me that she'd called Crimestoppers on several occasions before and knew that it worked, because the criminals that she'd previously told us about had been arrested.

"People fear going to the police with information about crime for a number of reasons. But apart from anything else, there are some terribly evil and violent criminals in this world. I can understand why standing up in court against them could be really difficult. That's where Crimestoppers makes such a difference to people.”
