42-day terrorist detention leak

[28th April 2008]

A leaked paper suggests that judges may be given the power to release terror suspects with an electronic tag, to meet Gordon Brown's aim to give police 42-days to charge terror suspects.

It was also stated that suspects could be released on bail, which could be a move towards extending the time police have to either charge or release individuals suspected of terrorism offences.

Gordon Brown hopes to revise the Counter-Terrorism BIll in June and extend the maximum precharge limit from 28 days to 42 days. Up to 50 Labour MPs currently oppose this move.
