One in ten young people affected by guns and knives

[17th April 2008]

A children's charity has found that one in ten youths have been personally affected by gun and knife crime and 20% feel they are sometimes or often in danger.

NCH studied 800 people aged under 25 over a six month period. The study, called 'Step Inside Our Shoes: Young People's Views on Gun and Knife Crime', recommended that young people need access to more community-based youth services and structures activities.

36% of the young peple had fears about crime in their area.

While 15% had been affected by gun and knife crime personally, 41% knew someone who had been affected.

NCH have called for under-16s to be included in official national crime surveys, so that the extent that young people are victims can be better understood.
