Compensation in Rachel Nickell murder

[14 August 2008]

The man who was wrongly accused of murdering Rachel Nickell in 1992 has won £706,000 in compensation.

Ms Nickell was stabbed 49 times on Wimbledon Common in front of her two-year-old son. Colin Stagg, 44, was cleared of the murder in 1994, after the judge ended the case, stating that the police had used a 'honey-trap' plot to encourage him to confess to the killing. Robert Napper, 41, was charged with the murder in November last year and is awaiting trial. Mr Stagg found his ability to work compromised because of the stigma attached to him in relation to the killing. Mr Stagg lived near the murder scene and walked his dog on the common. He spent 13 months in custody, but always maintained his innocence and later passed a lie detector test.
