Concern over hidden CCTV in schools
[18 August 2008]
23% of teachers have said that there may be hidden cameras in their schools, whose existence was unknown to both staff and pupils.
A survey of 249 primary and secondary school teachers suggests that 84.6% of schools have CCTV. Although nearly 53% said it made them feel safer, up to a quarter were concerned that there were additional 'hidden' cameras that they weren't aware of. Teachers maintained that students felt more secure with the CCTV in their schools, so that teachers could go back and look at the footage after an incident, such as bullying. 97.6% of teachers said CCTV was mostly used for security purposes, although nearly 50% said it was also used for monitoring pupil behaviour. Although more than three-quarters of those questioned said the CCTV was positioned at the school entrance, nearly 10% said they had CCTV in toilets, and 15% said they had more than 20 cameras in their school.
