Murder inquiry unlikely in Jersey
[31 July 2008]
Although the remains of at least five children have been found at a former children's home in Jersey, a murder inquiry is not likely.
Officers have said that because an exact date cannot be put on the remains, it is unlikely that there will be a murder inquiry. Police have found 65 milk teeth and 100 bone fragments at Haut de la Garenne, the former children's home. Police believe the children whose remains they have found were aged between four and eleven. Experts have said that the condition of the teeth means that they could only have come out after death. Evidence shows that the remains were burned and that attempts were made to cover them up in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Approximately 100 people have come forward claiming abuse at the home.
