Tackling Violence Action Plan
[18th February 2008]
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will be announcing a new drive to tackle violent crime in England and Wales today.
Strategies to tackle violent crime will incude more metal detectors and search wands to discourage people from carrying knives. Special metal detectors will be small enough to fit into police vans, so they can transport them to pubs, clubs and schools.
There will also be better information-sharing on those who are most likely to commit violent crimes.
There will also be a £1million awareness-raising campaign to explain to young people that carrying a knife for protection actually increases their chance of being a victim.
There were 258 knife-related deaths in 2006-07, compared with 219 the previous year.
