PC fights for life after assault
A police constable has been left with life-threatening injuries after being attacked outside a nightclub. [8 February 2013]
West Midlands Police have not named the officer, who was off-duty when he was punched and left unconscious in Wolverhampton city centre on Monday January 28.
A force spokesman said the Sandwell-based constable, aged 33, remained in a critical condition in hospital.
The Pc was walking past Divine Bar in Darlington Street at around 4.30am when he became involved in a row with a black man and two white women who were leaving the club.
During a scuffle, the victim was punched and left unconscious in the road with a serious head injury.
Detectives believe the suspects - who were all in their late teens or early 20s - had been drinking in Divine Bar for several hours and are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen them on the night.
Detective Inspector Phil Asquith said: "I'd appeal for anyone who was in the club that night and may have seen them to contact police.
"Similarly I'm keen to hear from anyone who was driving along Darlington Street in the early hours of that morning, heading home after a night out or perhaps taxi drivers, as they may have seen the fight.
"At the time they may have written it off as a low-level disorder but it's a very serious assault which has left a man fighting for his life in hospital."
An 18-year-old man and two women have been arrested by police and bailed until a date in March, pending further inquiries.
Anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands Police CID on 101 or the independent Crimestoppers service on 0800 555111.
