Rise in sham marriages for illegal immigrants
There has been a 54% rise in suspected sham marriages in England and Wales, according to an undercover investigation by the BBC. [8 January 2010]
The investigation used new figures from the Home Office and looked into how such marriages work. Sham marriages frequently occur when illegal immigrants are looking to make their stay in the country more permanent. International gangs will sell a spouse to immigrants - the one offered to the BBC team would have cost £20,000.
