[24 July 2008]
Anne Darwin, the wife of the canoeist who faked his death, has been jailed for six years and six months after fraudulently claiming £250,000.
Her husband, 57-year old John Darwin, has received a six year and three month jail sentence. A compensation meeting to determine how the Darwins will pay back the £250,000 they defrauded will take place at a later date. Mr Darwin was jailed for deception, while his wife was convicted of six fraud charges and nine money-laundering charges. The couple's two sons, who Mrs Darwin convinced their father was dead, were described by the judge as the 'real victims'.
