Crime suspect bail laws reviewed

Bail laws will soon be reviewed because of the number of crimes committed by suspects released while awaiting trial.

The Ministry of Justice wants to strengthen the rules on granting bail in some cases because the current law includes a “general right” to bail. Justice Secretary Jack Straw will announce the evaluation to MPs. The concern follows the high-profile case of Garry Weddell, a policeman who killed his mother-in-law while on bail for his wife's murder.
