Criminals' punishment must be more visible

In order to restore public confidence to the justice system, criminal punishment needs to be more visible, according to a review for the Cabinet Office.

Louise Casey's review, intended to inform policy, says people in the UK feel “cut off” from the criminal justice system. Her review, which makes about 30 recommendations, suggests that neighbourhood police hold regular public meetings and issue leaflets about the offenders that have been caught. Ms Casey believes that victims and local people should know when someone has been charged and punished. The review, which will be published later, was ordered by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to raise the public's confidence in criminal justice.
