Knife crime to be ranked alongside murder and rape under new rules

Carrying a knife unlawfully will be placed in a category of “excluded offences” for which offenders are automatically charged.
Offences already in this category include kidnap, arson and poisoning. This change, a main step in the Government's plan for tougher action against those who carry knives, will not allow officers to let off culprits with a reprimand or warning.
