Straw to outline emergency legislation plan

Justice Secretary Jack Straw will make a statement to MPs outlining a plan to allow witnesses in some trials to stay anonymous.
The statement will be made at 1215 BST. The emergency legislation plan has come after the law lord's ruling last week that defendants need to know who is testifying against them. This new rule has already led to one £6 million trial being halted. The Metropolitan police are concerned by the potential consequences of the ruling, because anonymous witnesses have resulted in several high-profile convictions, many of them gang related.
