Teenager beaten and thrown to his death after failed pin number

[26 June 2008]

Three predators threw 17-year-old Robert Gills into the Great Ouse, in Bedford, because they thought he was lying about his pin number.

The attack occurred after a night out on Boxing Day when Gills got separated from his older brother. Sean Downes, 18, Thomas Luddington, 17, and a 16-year-old boy denied murdering the teenager in Luton Crown Court. Timothy Spencer, QC, prosecuting, said Downes and the 16-year-old boy took Gills to the cash machine where they made seven attempts to withdraw money, but the boy had insufficient funds. The predators thought Downes was withholding his true pin number, so they proceeded to punch and kick him before dragging him by his hair to a bridge over the river and throwing him in. The trial will continue.
