Wrong-way car driver on A64 arrested in York

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and drink-driving after travelling on the wrong side of a main road in York. [26 June 2012]

North Yorkshire Police said the driver from Leeds collided with another car on the A64 between Fulford and the Hopgrove roundabout.

The driver and passengers of the other vehicle were treated at York District Hospital for minor injuries.

Police said the incident took place at 00:40 BST on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was stopped by officers on the A19 at Crocky Hill after he was seen driving eastbound on the westbound carriageway of the A64, police said.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
