Face recognition cameras target underage drinkers
[13th May 2008]
In attempts to stop children from buying alcohol and cigarettes, the supermarket chain Budgens has installed face recognition cameras.
By making a template of each customer's face, the system spots people who have been unable to prove they are 18 in the past, and proceeds to alert the cashier with a signal. The system also recognises the customers who have previously been able to prove they are 18 or older, so that no questions are asked and they can make a speedy purchase. Cameras have been installed in one London branch of Budgens to test the system.
