Binge drinkers tackled in the Budget
[13th March 2008]
In the Budget, which was announced yesterday, it was announced that alcohol tax will go up by 6% above inflation.
Following this, alcohol tax will go up by 2% above inflation for the next four years.
The 6% increase comes into effect this Sunday 16th March, which equates to an extra 4p on a pint of beer, 14p on a bottle of wine and 55p on bottles of spirits.
Binge drinking and the associated problems of anti-social behaviour and crime has been a prominent feature of the news recently. This tax increases coincides with major supermarkets talking about increasing the price of alchol to deter young people from drinking alcohol in large quantities.
