Crimestoppers denies Home Office grant axe

[23rd February 2008]

In response to the article in the weekend's Sunday Express by Jason Groves, the Chief Executive of the charity Crimestoppers, Michael Laurie CBE, said that contrary to the claims of Mr Groves, he was very optimistic about the future of Crimestoppers:

"Funding is always tight because we are a charity, and there is just so much for us to do. The list of projects and initiatives we want to run to help the police fight crimes is huge. But everybody understands that, particularly the Home Office, and only last week the Minister, Lord West, stated in the House of Lords that they are 'hoping to develop a funding line that will give Crimestoppers some security in the future' with 'no danger of that stopping at the moment because we accept that Crimestoppers is very important'.

"This year is our 20th anniversary and over the 20 years we have built up momentum, we are helping the police catch the most serious criminals, and have an enormous amount of support from the government, the police and our donors, and there's absolutely no risk of our stopping now."
