'Drowned' canoeist admits deception

[14th March 2008]

Canoeist John Darwin, who was presumed dead five years ago, has admitted to obtaining cash by deception after he reappeared.

His wife has denied six charges of deception. Darwin, 57, vanished in 2002 after he went canoeing near his home. His canoe was found near his home near Seaton Crew in Hartlepool. A large air-sea search followed, but when no trace of his body was found, he was pronounced dead. His wife subsequently sold their home and moved to Panama.
