Gun crime sentences criticised

Merseyside's Chief Constable has accused some judges of giving lenient sentences for gun crimes.
Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe has said that the mandatory five-year sentence for possession of a firearm has been overlooked on numerous occasions.
The average sentence given for possession of a firearm in 2005 was three years and nine months. Only about 40% of offenders were given the mandatory minimum sentence.
