Paedophile hostel ban

[28th March 2008]

A ban on paedophiles being housed in hostels near schools has been criticised because it has led to some dangerous individuals being improperly monitored in the community.

The ban was implemented in 2006 by the Home Secretary after a campaign by News of the World. A total of 14 out of the 100 bail hostels in England and Wales were affected. The ban led to a shortfall in places for sex offenders, leading to some serious offenders being improperly monitored in the community.

Creating new hostels has also been impossible because of the extent of local opposition.
