Young children to sign 'good behaviour' contracts

[18th March 2008]

Children as young as ten will be asked to sign 'good behaviour contracts' to prevent them from offending in the future, according to Children's Secretary Ed Balls.

Forming part of an expansion of Family Intervention Projects due to be unveiled by Ed Balls, approximately 1,000 of the most 'challenging' children will have to stick to the order. If they don't, they risk a criminal record.

The £218million project will be piloted in twenty areas over the next three years, in the hope that young troublemakers won't become involved in more serious crimes. Each child in the scheme will be assigned a care worker who will give them one-to-one support.
