Northumbria Police has launched an investigation after an armed robbery took place at a bookmakers in Gateshead. [14 March 2012]

 A man armed with a handgun entered the William Hill bookmakers on Sheriff's Highway at 8.15pm on Monday and threatened staff before fleeing with some money.

 No-one was injured in the incident, although staff were left distressed.

 The offender is described as white, 6ft and slim. Witnesses said he spoke with a Tyneside accent.

'Traumatic'

 DS David Hirst said: "This incident was particularly traumatic and has had a significant impact on staff members present during the robbery.

 "We are carrying out a number of enquiries in an effort to trace the person responsible. I'd urge any witnesses or anyone with information about the robbery to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
