Airport staff criminal records go unchecked

Foreign workers at UK airports have not undergone mandatory criminal record checks, BBC's Newsnight has revealed.

Although staff have undergone UK criminal checks, offences abroad have not been covered.

Since the terrorist attacks on 11th September 2001, the UK government introduced mandatory criminal records checks for all staff who work airside. The government has said it would take too long and be too complex to check criminal records from abroad.
