Witness anonymity plans

Witnesses to crimes may receive immediate anonymity when they offer to testify against gangs in court.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is expected to announce this new move in a speech today. She is also thought to be considering widening court powers to restrict the movement of gang members. With the current system, witnesses are unlikely to receive a guarantee of anonymity until close to the beginning of a trial.
