A third of young people drink to get drunk, with serious consequences for crime

[25th January 2008]

In a poll by government-funded 'Positive Futures' programme, 50% of the 10-19 year olds questioned had been involved in fighting or agressive behaviour as a result of drinking. A quarter had been in trouble with the police.

The national poll questioned 1,250 young people. 52% bought alcohol from a local corner shop, off licence or supermarket, and up to 44% drank it in their park, street or elsewhere in their housing area.

Interestingly, 46% of these young people thought that sports and other positive activities would reduce alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour.
