Archbishop Tutu backs gun crime scheme in Merseyside
[30th January 2008]
The scheme, which launches today, is part of a national project to encourage British policymakers to learn the lessons of South Africa. UK firearms offences reportedly topped 10,000 during the last year.
The scheme will see a new fund established to offer grants to pay for activities to help vulnerable young people who are most likely to fall into criminal activity. The scheme will also explore how gang culture has originated in the UK and will look at new approaches to tackle anti-social behaviour.
The Tutu Foundation want to encourage the adoption of the same principles that were used in South Africa to move the country from a violent regime to a democracy without brutality and turmoil.
Archbishop Tutu will announce the partnership in a pre-recorded video today.
