Food hygiene failures among a quarter of caterers

[28 May 2008]

A BBC investigation has uncovered that almost a quarter of caterers in Greater Manchester have not met food hygiene regulations.

They found that out of the more than 13,000 cafes, restaurants, takeaways and hospital and school canteens in the county, 24% were not following basic hygiene laws. Caterers who do not follow these laws could face fines as much as £20,000 or even six months in jail if it is a serious offence. The breaches that were uncovered included dirty kitchens along with rodent and cockroach infestations.
