Student raped in park

[23 September 2008]

A 20-year old student was raped in Manchester after getting lost on the way home from a friend's house.

The incident occurred on Sunday night, after the victim asked two men for directions. They offered to help her find her way home, but instead led her towards Platt Fields Park and raped her. After the men left, the victim hailed a taxi from a street nearby.

Police are asking for witnesses who may have been in the area at the time to come forward. The men told the victim they were Iraqi Kurds, and are described as 5ft 5in and in their late 20s. One was wearing jeans and was carrying a black rucksack; the other was wearing black adidas tracksuit trousers with a white stripe down either side. Both men were riding mountain bikes.

The incident happened between 8pm and 11pm. Detectives would also like to speak to the taxi driver who took the woman home after the incident. He is described as mixed race and in his 30s. He dropped the woman off outside the Queen of Hearts pub in Fallowfield. Police stress that the taxi driver had nothing to do with the attack.
