Policewoman jailed over shooting

A policewoman has been jailed for trying to kill her former lover by shooting him with her police-issued handgun.
Diane Northcott, 41, pleaded guilty to trying to shoot Sergeant Laurence Smyth inside a Newtonabbey police station a year and a half ago.
They had been having an affair, but when he tried to end the relationship, Northcott shot him in the neck and thigh. Sergeant Smyth is now wheelchair-bound. Northcott was sentenced to 12 years in jail.
