Homemade bomb student detained in hospital

[24th April 2008]

A chemistry student who set-off homemade bombs outside a Glasgow nightclub to get back at his ex-girlfriend has been ordered to stay in hospital.

Steven Docherty, 29, set off a device in Midland Street before setting off a second device that sprayed gas onto the road.

Docherty admitted to both putting the public at risk and possessing homemade explosive devices. The juge of the case asked doctors to examine Docherty before deciding on a sentence. Psychiatric reports confirmed that there was enough of a link between the illness he was suffering and the bomb incident for him to avoid a prison sentence.
