8 million pound cocaine smuggler jailed
A lorry driver has been jailed for over eight years after he tried to smuggle 45 kilos of cocaine through the Dover port [13 September].
The 49-year-old from Burscough in Lancashire admitted the charge of being knowingly concerned in the importation of a controlled class A drug.
He was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court.
The cocaine haul found in the driver's lorry was concealed in a false bulkhead and had a street value of approximately £8 million.
It was found after border officials stopped and searched the vehicle on 6 July.
When questioned, the driver claimed that he was travelling back from France by ferry after helping a friend transport their personal effects using the lorry.
