Blue Blindfold campaign

[5 June 2008]

Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Crimestoppers are teaming up with the UK Human Trafficking Centre (UKHTC) to launch Blue Blindfold campaigns during the summer.

The UKHTC campaign seeks to raise the public's awareness about what to look for in their communities which might indicate that someone is working against their will. Summertime is the height of the fruit and vegetable picking season which attracts labour, some of whom are working under duress. By promoting the Blue Blindfold website it is hoped that the public will be more inclined to question what they see and tell someone.

Suspicions may also apply to those working illegally, so the UK Borders Agency will also be involved. They too want to increase the flow of community intelligence they receive. Members of the public can not be expected to know the status of the individual or activity which has aroused their suspicions.

Campaign launches are being timed for early July to coincide with the publication of the results of Pentameter 2, which targeted people who had been trafficked for the sex industry.
