Warning after racist attack

[29 August 2008]

A teenager's uncle has said that Arabs should not send their children to England for safety reasons, after his nephew was killed in a racially-motivated attack.

Mohammed Al-Majed, 16, suffered serious head injuries after he was attacked outside a takeaway in Hastings last week. He died in hospital two days later. Ghazi Abdullah al-Majed said that Mohammed had told him about hostility towards Arabs in the East Sussex town. Hastings and Rye MP Michael Foster said in a meeting that: "Hastings is not a racist town. But we do have a significant minority of individuals who are racist and they are encouraged by extremist groups that seek to play a part in stirring up unrest." Sussex Police have said that crimes against foreign students was low in the area, with only 12 assaults recorded between April and August this year. The council have also said that the town is home to people of at least 100 different nationalities.
