Mazda London Triathlon 2009

On Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August, seven dedicated competitors took part in the Mazda London Triathlon to raise funds for Crimestoppers. The team included athletes from across the country and all walks of life.

Competitors braved the typically varied conditions of a British summer – rain on Saturday and strong sunshine on Sunday – to swim, cycle and run through London's docklands. The heat made it a particularly tough challenge, but despite this, every single one of the team completed the event and even enjoyed the experience.

Team member Paul said: “It was a fantastic event and great to complete my first ever triathlon while supporting such a wonderful organisation.”

What is the Mazda London Triathlon?

Triathlons are growing in popularity in the UK, and the Mazda London Triathlon is the largest in the world. 13,000 participants swim, cycle and run along a course that takes in the world-famous sights of London's Docklands. The triathlon takes place over two days; which day you compete on depends on what challenge you choose.

There are three distance categories to choose from:

• Super Sprint: Open to individuals only, this consists of 400m Swim, 10km bike and 2.5km run
• Sprint: Open to both teams and individuals, this category contains a 750m Swim, 20km bike, and 5km run
• Olympic: The ultimate challenge for teams and individuals, 1500m Swim, 40km bike, 10km run

Fancy taking on the Triathlon challenge in 2010? The number of different categories mean that both experienced athletes and absolute beginners can take part. Fifty percent of entrants have never competed in triathlon before, and a huge number of participants of all levels choose to raise money for charity while taking part.
