Criminals help to get Drug dealers off Birmingham streets

22 June 2011
West Midlands Crimestoppers is dedicated to fighting crime across the West Midlands.
Drug dealers in Birmingham are looking over their shoulders as Crimestoppers charity moves in with a new campaign funded by other criminals.
Eastern areas of the City such as Washwood Heath, Sparkhill and Sparkbrook are encouraged to ring the charity about drug dealers and other criminals safely and anonymously.
Pauline Hadley Regional Manager for Crimestoppers said: “Drug dealers no longer have anywhere to hide. They normally rely on intimidating neighbours into not giving information about their activities. No one can possible know who has called us. We are not the police so we can guarantee anonymity to everyone who gives us information.
The year-long campaign is funded by ‘proceeds of crime’ and is being supported by communities across East Birmingham. The call to call the Charity’s national number 0800 555 111 will be found on billboards, post cards through doors and radio adverts.
The first part of the campaign tackles drug dealers through giant ‘Wasted’ posters asking passersby to call the charity and to ‘stop drugs destroying your community’.
West Midlands Crimestoppers received 7261 pieces of information about criminals between April 2010 – March 2011 and as a result, 426 criminals were taken off the streets
“Our service is completely anonymous and in the 23 years that the charity’s been running no caller has ever been identified.  The service helps make communities safer. We’re not part of the Police or government, we’re an independent charity, so by contacting us you’ll never have to give a statement or go to court.”
We rely on our active volunteers to promote the benefits of the charity to vulnerable communities. Over the last year West Midlands Crimestoppers has led high-profile campaigns to remove criminals affecting communities such as Asian groups, teenagers and those who have been robbed or burgled.
As a result, more information is coming in anonymously by mobile phones and online through our websites, www.crimestoppers-uk.org and www.fearless.org. We go to great lengths to guarantee the safety and anonymity of our callers. Crimestoppers does not appear on phone bills and is the only organization in the world that can block sender’s URL’s (computer addresses) to guarantee that their identity cannot be revealed.

West Midlands Crimestoppers is dedicated to fighting crime across West Midlands.

We help to promote the charity in communities across the region, to let people know that Crimestoppers is there for them as an anonymous route to pass on information about crime. Crimestoppers guarantees anonymity, which means that no-one can ever find out who passed on information about crime.

To pass on information about crime anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or fill out our secure, encrypted online Giving Information Form.

West Midlands Crimestoppers is run by volunteers – each and every one is a vital link with the community in the region. If you think you'd like to volunteer for West Midlands Crimestoppers, please fill out our Volunteer Enquiry Form.
